2018/19 Season Report

After the end of the 2018/19 season itís time to reflect on the season in general.

Anglers on the bank were vastly reduced due mainly to the EAís ongoing work to the Barrier Bank and the reduced car parking after the parking area was taken over as a site office. Thankfully, Jackson Hyde have now completed the work on the eastern barrier bank (although they are back in July 2019 to complete the restoration of the haul road) and through the site meetings with Monica Stonham we were kept pretty much up to date throughout with progress.

Work will continue on the western barrier bank from July but this wonít have the same impact on club access (although it will affect use of the middle bank on that stretch of the counter drains Old Bedford River).

Early season returns saw lots of good tench being caught with the best I know of being a 9lb 2oz specimen and several catches of mid- range fish around the 5-7lb mark.

Silver fish catches have remained pretty consistent throughout when allowing for the clear water conditions which have prevailed through most of the season. It was good to see our friends from ďup northĒ braving the horrendous conditions in the last week of the season - well done to them for their perseverance, Iím glad you caught enough to keep you happy.

Pike have shown regularly throughout the season, although the early season catches seemed to be mainly jacks. The last 6 weeks of the season saw plenty of bigger fish caught with a few low 20ís and also plenty of high teens caught along with a few juvenile zander.

The larger perch have been absent for most of the season (with the exception of an otter kill on the West Bank) and in the last few weeks even the smaller specimens have been a rarity.

Reports are now coming in regularly of 3-4 otters on the bank but I fear that this is something we have to live with and hope that they donít do too much damage to fish stocks.

Hopefully the 2019/20 season will see the number of anglers increase with access to all of our waters, once Jackson Hyde complete the haul road work and we can look forward to a season of good sport for all.

Members who joined the club in 2014 are reminded that their membership is due for renewal in order to fish next season. Please send a new membership form quoting your existing membership number ASAP.

Letís hope for tight lines all round and I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible on the bank.
